What is 30 Days Wild?

30 Days Wild is a campaign initiative organised by The Wildlife Trust to encourage people to ‘do something wild’ everyday throughout the month of June. This challenge is not about going on a 10-mile hike every day, but to make the conscious effort to take notice of the nature around us.

Ideas range from dancing in the rain, making a sculpture with rocks or preparing bird food. It’s free to take part in this challenge and a real enjoyment for kids of all ages.

Why do we take part?

As a family we spend a lot of time outside and it’s a rare day when we don’t leave the house. I don’t drive so we are always walking somewhere. However, just because we are outside, this does not mean we are always aware of the nature around us. Often, we are rushing here and there, trying to get to places on time. It’s easy to get caught up in a busy day and forget about the natural world around us.

I find this 30-day challenge provides a prompt, a gentle reminder even, to take a moment and consider the things we see and do whilst we are outside. During this time, we try to consciously raise our awareness of nature. While around the dinner table later on we try to discuss if we have seen or done or noticed anything particularly wild throughout the day.

Plan it out so the whole family can get excited.

Free Resource Pack

The Wildlife Trust’s 30 Days Wild is a free initiative that anyone can sign up to and take part in. Once you’ve signed up you will receive a pack providing loads of resources for the month. You can apply for a pack to be sent to you by post or by via email. These packs are both the same so if you have a printer, consider signing up for the digital version to help save this great charity on postage.

If you are unfamiliar with Hands-On Education then the best place to start is with our completely free topic: Seasons. While this is designed for Year 1 children our boys are eighteen months apart and can still enjoy them together.

In the postal or digital pack, you will receive:

  • An introductory letter.
  • A wall chart to record the wild activities you do each day.
  • A bee poster.
  • A sensory bingo sheet.
  • A word search.
  • Great cards to lead the day.

    The School Postal Pack

The trust offers an individual or school postal pack. If you are a home educating family you can sign up to receive the school pack. Simply apply as a school / youth group and provide your address.

A few years back when we first found out about 30 Days Wild my husband signed up for the school pack while I signed up for the individual one. We weren’t sure what the difference was and maybe got a little overly excited! The school pack does provide a few extras that we certainly found useful. It’s worth noting that many of the school pack resources can reused so we only applied for it the once and have enjoyed them ever since.

In this pack you will receive:

  • An introductory letter.
  • An A3 wall chart to record the wild activities you do each day.
  • A bee poster.
  • A journey planner.
  • Activity idea cards.
  • A packet of seeds.
  • A sensory bingo sheet.
  • A word search.
  • Find flowers you normally just walk past.
